South Zone State Profiles: Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Orissa, Sri Lanka, Tamil Nadu

Orissa, the second largest of the East Indian states, has a geographical area of 15.6 million hectares, out of which 9.7 million hectares are cropped area. Rice is the major crop of the state. The annual foodgrain production is 7.6 million tonnes. The state has a population of 3.67 crores with a population density of 236 per square kilometer. The total consumption of N + P2O5 + K2O at 354 thousand tonnes in 2004-05 represented a positive growth of 8.6% over previous year. N, P2O5 and K2O consumption at 225.3, 77.1 and 51.9 thousand tonnes during the year 2004-05 represented a positive growth of 7.2%, 15.7% and 4.8% respectively compared to last year. NPK use ratio changed from 4.3:1.3:1 during 2003-04 to 4.3:1.5:1 in 2004-05. Kharif:Rabi share of fertilizer consumption changed from 72:28 in 2003-04 to 70:30 in 2004-05. Per hectare consumption in 2004-05 is 40.3 kg. Among the Eastern and Northeastern States, Orissa has one of the lowest productivity of almost all major crops. The reason lies in the fact that, although Orissa has more cropped area than West Bengal, the total consumption of N + P2O5 + K2O in Orissa ( about 0.35 million tonnes) is about 1/4 of that of West Bengal (1.3 million tonnes). This suggests a major deficit in nutrient application in the state. It is a fact that increases in productivity anywhere in the world, cannot be achieved without increasing the use of fertilizers. Orissa is no exception. And the surging demand for food in the state has to be met by raising productivity per unit of arable land. The table below amply demonstrates the extent of deficit in plant nutrients at the present level of production. Thus, to meet the targeted production level of the state, commensurate with the increasing population, adequate and balanced supply of plant nutrients is a must.
